What should you major in to get a good career?

I think the best possible thing you can pick to be your major is something you truly enjoy and supplement that with some business classes. Honestly, the best advice I got was to take the classes I was interested in and then look at what I took and pick a major similar to that. I ended up double majoring in English and Psychology. I graduated in May and I am preparing for my first job in Public Relations and advertising and my undergraduate classes prepared me FAR better for this career than I could have imagined.

That being said, that doesn't mean taking a whole bunch of electives, just intro classes in fields that are interesting: psychology, literary theory, philosophy, history, literature, creative writing, sociology etc. This will help you find a focus for your studies. Picking a liberal arts major allows you the most flexibility in your career path. BUT you must supplement that major with some KEY classes. I think every college student should take marketing, accounting, personal finance, and a journalism or writing class. I would also HIGHLY reccomend a class on interviewing or public speaking. If any of these spark your interest, continue on that path to complement your liberal arts degree and give you some practical, real-world-application knowledge.

The thing that is going to get you started on your career is definitely not only (or even mostly) your major. It is the things you do during college and the activities you put your time into that count. On your resume, the education and major information takes up only 1/5 of the page: the rest is your activities and leadership positions! People who interview you want to know what you spent all your time doing - this tells them how motivated you are and what kind of things you will excel at. GET INVOLVED!

The last good piece of advice I can give is that EVERY SINGLE PERSON YOU EVER MEET COULD SOMEDAY HELP YOU GET A JOB! They are ALL in your network. So really talk to the people you meet, find out what they do, if they like it, how they got into it. And you will be so surprised about how willing people are to help you out in getting a job. If you are interested in a career, find someone in that field, call them up, and ask them if they have 15 minutes they can spend meeting with you and giving you advice. This could result in a few things. Worst case scenario: you are now more educated about this career choice. Next best: they give you the names of a couple more people who can give you advice. Best case scenario: they have a job opening and they want to give it TO YOU!

This is a compilation of all the best career advice I ever got: and it all really worked! I didn't major in something boring just to get a job. I loved school and now I love work - it really does translate! So pick something you love, take those core practical classes, and get engaged on your campus. College is amazing, but getting a job you love is just as fabulous!
